The Most Absurd Arguments About the Oil Spill

The gulf disaster has opened up a gushing plume of nonsensical rhetoric.

BY ANDREW SWIFT | JUNE 3, 2010

ON LAND, BABY, ON LAND

Who said it: Sarah Palin

Money quote: "Extreme Greenies:see now why we push'drill, baby, drill'of known reserves&promising finds in safe onshore places like ANWR? Now do you get it?"

The argument: Whenever there's an opportunity to attack Barack Obama's administration, Sarah Palin is eager to push the message. The former Alaska governor's always-amusing Twitter feed has been filled up recently with suggestions and accusations about the catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico. Unsurprisingly, she has consistently reiterated her old "drill, baby, drill" talking points.

But in the wake of the Gulf fiasco, Palin has conveniently forgotten her constant advocacy for offshore drilling and instead focused on the need to drill on land. Palin also put it directly to President Obama, tweeting (punctuation original): "'I never say drill, baby, drill' Ahh, that's much of the problem,Mr.President;Drill ANWR&unlock land for safe onshore devlpmnt/energy security."

Palin published a Facebook note on Wednesday expounding on her argument, writing "Radical environmentalists: you are damaging the planet with your efforts to lock up safer drilling areas. There's nothing clean and green about your misguided, nonsensical radicalism, and Americans are on to you as we question your true motives."

Opponents of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge say it would not only ruin what has been called "America's Serengeti" -- home to numerous animal species, including polar and grizzly bears, a large number of caribou, and many different birds and fish -- but would provide little relief for the American public. A 2004 study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration said that drilling in ANWR would lower gas prices a meager 3.5 cents a gallon by 2027.

saw this on another site from an Alaskan and then my thoughts...

'I live in Alaska.

And thanks to 7 tours of duty in Alaska with the US Coast Guard I have on the ground all over the North Slope and flown all over Alaska.

ANWR is a joke - it is one huge mud puddle full of eel grass, knee deep swamp water, and dense clouds of mosquitoes. At 100 feet away it is hard to tell if it is a human, caribou, or bear walking toward you - there are so many mosquitoes. What kills me - is the wonderful picture of ANWR they keep showing to Congress - with mountains and caribou - that is NOT a pic of ANWR. It is a picture of the Brooks Range - that is not in ANWR - taken by a photographer standing in the mosquito infested ANWR looking outward.

What's worse - put in perspective - if ANWR were a big football field, the area they want to drill in would be just a postage stamp sized parcel. People in the lower 48 - and Congress - have no clue how big the place is.

I really wish the folks in the lower 48 would sell us to China or Russia - anyone - who is willing to let us gain access to our reasources. There is enough gas and oil to run the whole USA for hundres of years, and clean coal for another 500 years. If we could just get this energy out of the ground and moving - I am sure in the next 700+ years we can build a better solar panel or find a better energy source.

God - I hate stupid people. Especially the ones that live in large lower 48 cities and think they know what is best for the folks who live here.'

--- I myself am from Orange Beach, Alabama and I am watching my world slowly fall apart. I am fearful that everything I have and love will be gone soon...this is the place where I grew up; where I have spent the last 11 years building a very successful career; and where I am now raising my family. Suddenly, on April 20th my life changed...my income has ceased directly from oil related fears yet my bills are still here. My kids may never be able to play on the soft white sand that we cherish, or swim in crystal clear water, or watch a pelican dive into the gulf or bay for his dinner, or eat local fish, shrimp, oysters....or even play with the little hermit crabs that live in the bay behind my parent's house. I am so heartbroken...this is our lives, our home. I drive around town with a blank look on my face as do all of my neighbors...BP and the US Gov't need to find a way to fix this mess...and together, we all need to find a compromise for energy that is realistic and offers the most minimal effects to people's life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

oil spill

Another brilliant post from another brilliant Alaskan. For my money I'll take FP's opinion that Sarah's either a liar or clueless or both. I hope your beaches stay pristine but voting republican is not going to help them stay that way.

I guess oil pipelines never burst either

Ever heard of google...try this phrase "oil pipeline ruptures in Alaska" Hmmm, BP again.
Now, given the focus of attention on BP, certainly a very careful review of all their equipment and safety procedures should be initiated at all BP sites globally and most certainly here in the United States.

But why is it so many people (and particularly liberals) have what I love to call "short attention span syndrome"?

Now let's try to use reason, which is something that's apparently no longer taught in the US education system...because the world's need for oil isn't going to go away any time soon.
Unless of course you'd prefer all ocean shipping to stop (yes, google again...this time the magic phrase is "bunker fuel"). Personally, since I do possess an engineering degree and was taught to think critically, given the water pressure at 1 mile down in the ocean compared to drilling at shallower depths or on land, I'll take drilling on land any day of the week.
Ask yourself this simple question, would this leak have been plugged by now if it were on
dry land? Going to wikipedia and using the phrase "Kuwaiti oil fires" might provide some perspective in formulating your answer.

Oh, and anyone who imagines that this genius knows anything about the ANWR should google the hulahula river. Some travel sites for river guides and flickr sites of trips down that river that run right through the ANWR. Absolutely gorgeous.

People have a right to be misled in democracy

The opportunistic misrepresentation in the aftermath of Gulf oil leak is vintage Sarah Palin. Since she can’t possibly repeat ‘drill, baby, drill’ by itself now when she runs for US president, Sarah has decided to mislead people again.

The surprising part is that so many Americans still fall for Sarah’s rhetoric misrepresentations. I guess people have a right to be misled as well in a democracy.

Dig and burn...

We will not be able to power this century the same way we powered the last one. America should lead the world in renewable energy technology. I work for the worlds largest solar equipment manufacturer. We're moving to China.

MidEast oil funds terrorism.

It's not about saving 3.5 cents a gallon (or manipulating statistics to reach that conclusion). It's about where we buy our oil. The more "drilled" in America, the less funding that goes to terrorists.

Michael Brown still feels that he is a voice to be considered?

What hubris.

A guy who presided over the worst managed natural disaster in the last century has the gall to comment on the gulf oil spill? Who does he think takes him seriously? You'd think the minority party could find someone slightly more credible to criticize things. Not that I think there's any reason for it. Its just ridiculous. I used to consider myself a nominal republican, but the more that the wingnuts like Palin and Brownie are taken as spokespeople for the GOP, the more I am aghast at the persistent idiocy of their thinking.

DON'T BLAME OBAMA NOR OSAMA

Do not Blame OBAMA nor OSAMA
Neither Blame BP - but BB.
Not Brigitte Bardot, but the more feminine pair BUSH&BLAIR
They lied, They Killed over 5,000 Americans, and over a Million Iraqis and Afghanistanis - JUST IN THEIR GREED for OIL!

To the American Public who still think that their Fallen Comrades from this Invasion, serve their Country - think again - I convey my condolences to their helpless Families.

God being Merciful, now give AMERICA - FREE OIL gushed from the bottom of The Gulf of Mexico.

My reminder to Americans whose livelihoods are affected by this Spill, think of the Millions of Displaced Iraqis and Palestinian Refugees cause by this BB Illegal Invasion, and their support of Israelis' Blockade of GAZA.

Americans you are now reaping the Harvest of BB's Sins. Get the Troops out and come home safely to help clean up this Spill. It would be a more useful and humanitarian deed.

Intelligent Use of Resources

The key is to make sure we are intelligent about the use of our non-renewable resources. Regardless of your opinion on what is right or wrong, there are 2 big problems. First, big corporations will place profit and shareholders over the environment and extra safety precautions - it has happened too many times with too many companies to seriously argue any different. On the other side, we have to have these resources or continue to fund terrorist backed countries and make US hating countries very wealthy. Unfortunately, I don't know how to solve both problems at the same time. Somehow we have to come up with a good compromise.

What's this about global warming?

I think the intended meaning of clean-energy future in this case is finding a way to get energy other than putting a giant beast on stilts in the middle of the ocean to drill through the ocean floor. That's not clean in any way. It disrupts wildlife and does so dangerously.

It has nothing to do with climate change, and everything to do with NOT fucking up ecosystems and livelihoods.

Also, what's this happiness bull?

I can't help but have utter disdain for the relentless "pursuit of happiness" that is so important to people. Especially in it's current ugly, selfish and callously individualistic incarnation. The pursuit of "happiness is what caused this in the first place. Happiness to many people appears to be excessive material wealth. People wanted to do less work because it made them "happy", so they fudged numbers on inspection. People wanted to make money and paid little to no attention to this problem. And it's not just the oil spill.

Happiness is using you, you know.

Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Bristerhood and a viable Future. THAT is an honourable goal.

Bristerhood is brotherhood and sisterhood combined. I suppose I could've said fellowship.
