Another Side of Shanghai

Making space for glitzy Shanghai Expo sites and modern office buildings means clearing vestiges of the old city -- and the old Shanghainese who live there.

Modern Shanghai is a city of contrasts. The view we see most often in news photos is the ultra-modern side of Shanghai, with fancy Shanghai Expo pavilions, giant shopping malls, and the vast new Apple store that opened on July 10. But another aspect of Shanghai exists too, although it is quickly being cleared away: old buildings, poorer residents, and reminders of the city's less telegenic past.

Dangerous Construction should be cleared ASAP

otherwise any incident will be blamed on authorities for not acting in advance

But this effectively evicts people living there.

Can anyone please tell what happens to them afterward ? Are they told to leave Shanghai or they have to leave the city because they don't have means to live there anymore ?

Who owns land in China ? (I know a big Q but please 3-4 lines will do)

The original residents will be compensated

Unlike other parts of China, if you are a legal resident of Shanghai you will be compensated very well when you are forced out. I own a condo in near the center of Shanghai and only recently did they tore down the old buildings (dating back to the 1800s) around our neighborhood. I was told that some of the families were paid close to $6M RMB ($900K USD) to move. Granted, that is split among 2-4 families (Chinese families tend to live together) but it's still a sizable amount in China (or in the US). These people can move to the out skirts of Shanghai (pudong, around 20 miles out) and afford a fairly nice lifestyle. The poorest people in Shanghai are the migrants who come to Shanghai to look for work. In some cases the unemployed receives more from the government in something like a welfare system than the migrants who actually work full time.

The government still owns the land in China. However people are permitted to buy the buildings on top of the land. When you buy a home you have to sign a contract with the government which states that you are leasing the land from the government usually for 50-100 years. Your taxes pays for the lease.

Unfortunately this is the

Unfortunately this is the real part of things there. China shows only flourishing achievements while ordinary people struggle in inhuman conditions and starving. But the problem is all the communist countries. Leaders do not know the real state of the country or do not want to show the world. Those people need help and I do not think the Chinese government wants to do something about it.dezmembrari auto|new auto|piese auto import
