A woman dumps rubble into a crusher at a mine in India's Jharkhand state. Jharkhand has an estimated 2,500 off-the-books mining operations, an underground industry that has both built sympathy for the state's Maoist rebels and provided a source of income for their rebellion.

Biggest Dem
This photo essay (and the accompanying stoty) is a balanced, unbiased and well-researched piece. But it exposes some uncomfortable truths about western media's current darling, the world's 'biggest democracy' - so I expect it to be attacked viciously by the very beneficiaries of the liberalization that has created the gaping stratification the story describes.

Abuse of people and the environment is self defeating.
In India today, it is a common sight to see some poor day laborer doing all the grunt work usually with nothing more than a shovel in their bare hands. The law requires adequate occupational safety measures, but these are conveniently ignored by the employers in clear view of the corrupt authorities. They seem to conveniently forget that the raw materials being mined belongs to all the people and is not the exclusive preserve for private gain or corporate profit.
The fact that the government hires militias like the Salwa Judum to spy and intimidate ordinary people is clearly a prescription for disaster. How can any civilized government justify empowering militias to hunt and kill fellow citizens to serve the interests of the privileged few?
India should be hauled before the ICJ to explain its use of armed militias against its own citizens.

at least they eat
@Watty Well, if it is self-defeating, it will defeat itself so you can go back to sleep. As for ‘civilised government’, name me one.

India's Hidden War Inside the resource conflict you haven't hear
One of the most illustrative articles I have ever read about the politics of institutionalized loot and violence by the state on the indigenous poor just for the sake of maximizing profits for a handful of corporates

East Germany was the showcase
East Germany was the showcase of the Soviet Union and, therefore, most advanced compared to the West. This isn't the case in North Korea and a sudden opening could lead to mass migration as well as destitude for North Koreans. it will take more than prison to keep this tycoon away from the company he founded."
