Singapore's Sand

The island's growth is not fueled by sand smuggling.

BY LIM YUIN CHIEN | SEPTEMBER 28, 2010

The allegations that Singapore's land reclamation was carried out using sand smuggled from its neighbouring countries ("The Sand Smugglers"  Aug. 4, 2010) and that the government condones this illegal sand trade are baseless. Singapore is a small island. To support our economic development, we import sand to reclaim land within our terroritorial waters. This means sand is extracted from elsewhere and brought to Singapore. Since Malaysia and Indonesia banned sea sand exports, we have sourced for reclamation sand from other sources.

The Singapore government does not condone illegal smuggling of sand. We have put in specific and stringent procedures to ensure that sand is extracted legally and in compliance with the environmental laws and regulation of the source countries.

The JTC Corporation imports sand for Singapore's land reclamation projects. JTC requires sand suppliers to show documentary proof that the sand will come from an approved sand concession holder, and requires each sand load to have valid documentation on the date and source location. To date, all sand vendors have provided valid clearance documentation from the source countries.

Singapore expects sand suppliers to respect the laws and regulations of their source countries. We cannot police or enforce laws and regulations which are the sovereign responsibility of the source countries, but we will certainly cooperate with any investigations to the best of our ability within our laws, just as the Singapore authorities routinely cooperate with Malaysian and Indonesian enforcement agencies on a range of issues.

Sand Smuggling is "sanctioned" by the Govt

The PAP gov t can hoodwink foreigners but not its own increasingly critical citizens.

They have in place the laws but like many implementations/executions of such laws, they turn blind eyes to the practical aspect of it. They follow the letter of the law but not the spirit of it; knowing very well that it would be taken advantage of or allowing the defence that the law says this or that, but in real life, it fails as designed to fail.

Only when you touch on the PAP's birthright monopoly on politics, then you will find them so creative in putting a stop to anything that threatens them a million light years away. It is so laughable that the citizens are getting more sceptical only just now.

Look at their implementation of laws with regards to money laundering. As long as the money comes into singapore without being donated/given to opposition parties, the authorities close their eyes. When they investigate a complain, the officers will even ask so stupid robotic questions that will not result in discovering anything!

Look at how foreigners are recruited into Singapore low level jobs and their exploitation by employers and employment agencies. It is really pathetic. But then for high paying jobs, the foreigners are well looked after and protected. Many citizens are really ashamed of the way the govt treats these low level foreign workers.

The Judiciary is a laugh too. There are long list of cases where opposition members are unfairly treated whereas PAP members especially the Lee Dyanasty gets special treatment. Take a look at foreign correspondents or newspapers/magazines that dare to write unflattering remarks abt the Dynasty. They will only act if you circulate in Singapore and you have money to lose. Otherwise, they will shut up and pretends nothing happened.

The Judiciary are very politically perceptive and can act in "tandem" with the wishes of the government. Many years ago, when a Filipino maid, Flor was hanged for murder and the protests in Phillipines actually shocked the govt, it paved the way for Indonesian maids to murder their employers and for some reasons, always found guilty BUT never hanged because of some reasons pertaining to depression or insanity or whatever. The PAP knows that the Indonesians will take mob actions in Indonesia against the many assets of Singapore!

The hypocrisy of the Lee Dynasty is a shame and History will bring out all these. Future generations will spit on the Lee Family.
