The Grayest Generation

Forget about a youth boom -- the planet's population is getting older, fast. From the West Bank to Woodstock, a look at a world going gray.

The world's population is graying at rate that few foresaw -- and the implications are terrifying. And as Phillip Longman details in his article "Think Again: Global Aging," this dramatic pace is going to change the world as we know it -- politically, economically, militarily -- in ways you might not expect.

Looks like it's going to be a working retirement.

Never have understood retirement. Working is good for you if you plan it right.

No Retirement for the Wicked, the Weary OR the Elderly

I have never contemplated retirement. It's not really an option for me or most of my friends/associates.

Some people have embraced the mantra 'Shop till you drop'. My manta is 'Work til I can't '.

My mother wasn't kidding when she told me I had many more years to work......

Inadequate caption

Your caption for photo 12 of the couple in Beijing is OK as far as it goes, but it doesn't go far enough. The red armband and red caps indicate that these people are doing more than talking--they're working, performing community service. Comments about the many responsibilities retirees take on in their communities would have made for a more relevant caption than comments on private sector Shanghainese.

" ...few foresaw?"

"Graying at a rate that few foresaw"? Nonsense. I took a demographics course in 1981. The impact of the birth control pill on was well understood - many places were already at zero population growth. And it was very clear that baby boomers were consequently going to swell the ranks of the elderly to huge proportions all over the Western world and that societies would have difficulty coping. It was also clear that modern medicine and lifestyle improvements were extending the lifespan. All this was well understood 30 years ago.

The Grayest Generation is the lonely generation. I don't want to think when is my turn.

Do you mind if we link to this page?

Right at Home provides in-home care to seniors and others across the US with offices in the UK and Brasil. These photos are so stunning--we would like to show one on our blog with a link to the photo essay. Would that be acceptable?
