NATO at War

A look at the men and machines bringing the fight to Libya.

APRIL 14, 2011

The mission of the coalition of nations to protect Libyan citizens by "any means necessary" is now four weeks old, but the strength of the mission is becoming increasingly tenuous. Britain and France are now spearheading the intervention since the United States handed leadership off on March 31, but the NATO coalition seems increasingly splintered as it struggles with a mission that expressely prohibits the toppling of embattled Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi. Meanwhile, Qaddafi's forces are besieging the city of Misurata, and have adopted tactics that make them less of a target to Western air power. Above, a French Mirage 2000 fighter jet is parked on the Solenzara air base on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica on April 5.

Nice pictures

I have always liked how the Mirage 2000 and the Mirage Rafale look. The design is something to marvel.

Nitpicking/Awesome!

On the caption for picture #5, you said that the aircraft was from the USAF? The USAF doesn't have any E-2 Hawkeyes (the aircraft in the picture), but the US Navy and the French Navy do.

Other than that, absolutely amazing pictures.

Picture #5

That is not a US Air Force jet, that is instead a US Navy turboprop E-2C Hawkeye aircraft, that is probably a French Hawkeye since we sold them some for the Charles De Gualle

Picture 5 NOT USAF

Concur. This is a US- (Grumman-) built E-2C Hawkeye, an "all-weather, carrier based tactical warning and control system aircraft." Based on its French markings ("Marine" vice "Navy"), it's obviously one of the E-2s bought by France and flown off their carrier.

From Wikipedia, "The French Naval Aviation (Aeronavale) operates three E-2C Hawkeye and has been the only operator of the E-2 Hawkeye from an aircraft carrier besides the U.S. Navy. The French nuclear-powered carrier, the Charles De Gaulle, currently carries two E-2C Hawkeyes on her combat patrols offshore."

Of note, US Air Force has never operated E-2s and does not launch ANY of its fixed-wing planes from US Navy aircraft carriers, much less French carriers. (USAF helos might launch from a carrier or amphib flat-deck, but not on a routine basis.)

I really like photo #9 out of all the photos. I have actually made this the wallpaper on my computer. A bit stretched for my screen because of the smaller image, but still looks good. Thx for sharing these photos.

Incredible photos

These photos are incredible. The one on page 5 looks like it will fall off into the ocean if it moves sideways and will crash into a barrier if it moves back. Sheerly incredible.

And the aircrafts are magnificient too. They almost look like an abvreviation of civil planes if you are a civilian like me, unless you take a sharper look and realize how awesome and sharp these designs are.

All warfare is based on deception...

I always admire this quote from Sun Tzu; "All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near." I guess, the western forces requires a Strong Army’s Marketing Campaign in order for them to win this war, if there is really such a thing as winning in war.

I hate seeing so many wars

I hate seeing so many wars going on with deadly weapons. I was reading an article saying how India uses ghost chili for gas grenades as weapons and was wondering why everyone chooses to use such deadly weapons. Just a thought probably wont ever happen.

Great photos

As much as I hate war and the great photos are a result of us being engaged in war, I have to say these are great photos of the military in action though it does not show the darker side as much and the hardship, stress and trauma that our service men and women face as the country is engaged on different war fronts especially in the middle east. Surveys taken of anyone would probably show that many Americans are opposed to war and the cost both financially and life in which we have to fight them.

Interesting History

IAF bought forty nine Mirage 2000s, which include forty two single-seaters as well as seven two-seaters within the nineteen-eighties. During 2004, the Indian govt authorized acquisition of ten additional Mirage 2000Hs, showcasing better avionics, especially a better RDM 7 radar. The IAF called the Mirage the "Vajra", generally translated as "Thunderbolt". India additionally acquired suitable weapon stores in addition to the fighters, such as ATLIS II pods and also laser guided weaponry. An agreement had been finalized in 2010 to update all IAF Mirage 2000Hs to the Mirage 2000-5 Mark 2.

India has designated the nuclear strike task to its Mirage 2000 squadrons operating with the Indian Air Force since nineteen-eighty five. In the late 90s after the Kargil battle started, the Mirage 2000 carried out incredibly well throughout the entire clash within the high Himalayas, even though the Mirages that had been remit to India suffered from restricted air flow interdiction capacity as well as had to be greatly customized to drop laser guided weapons together with standard unguided bombs. A pair of Mirage squadrons travelled an overall total of 515 sorties, as well as in 240 strike objectives dumped 55,000 kg of ordnance. Simple repair along with a extremely high sortie level made the Mirage 2000 just about the most effective fighters of the Indian Air Force in the conflict.
