Send the Hill to Hogwarts

10 reasons why Washington should take a page from Harry Potter.

BY DAVID J. ROTHKOPF | JULY 14, 2011

This week marks the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two, the eighth installment of the most successful series in movie history. As such, it offers a useful comparison in the differences between what makes a successful summer blockbuster in Hollywood and what makes for one in Washington, DC. Here are the top ten:

10. Too Few House Elves in Washington (Too Many House Death Eaters)
Oh Dobby, Dobby, if only there were a man in Washington of your stature. Poor Dobby who died, according to his epitaph, "a free elf" was cranky and even less photogenic than Anthony Weiner, but he had heart and courage and took risks for those he served in ways that none on Capitol Hill seem to even comprehend. Meanwhile, there are far too many Death Eaters up there on the wrong end of Pennsylvania Avenue, swirling around in service of He Whose Name Cannot Be Spoken (Grover Norquist) regardless of the pain it may bring to those who actually elected them. (Norquist may succeed with anti-tax religion in doing what the leadership of the Soviet Union could not -- bankrupting and thus breaking America.)

Dumbledore being gay

....was really just a cheap ploy to pander to the pro-homosexual movement sweeping the West. There's nothing in the books that ever hinted at him being gay, and it's not like there wasn't ample opportunities to reveal such a trait if she truly intended him to be gay from the start.

I agree with Countchocula

The fact that she said he was gay, but it never being mentioned or shown or anything in any of the 7 books suggests that it was a PR stunt far more than it being originally planned.

A great article, funny but at

A great article, funny but at the same time brutally on target (and for that not funny at all).
Regarding the Dumbledore being gay issue - it doesn't matter at all. I agree it may have been a PR stunt but it has no effect on the story or other characters whatsoever.

Politicos would cheat, steal or even kill to be Harry

Very clever and spot on. As for Snape, those in D.C. we've long seen as Snapes, sadly, most likely will turn out to be the character we first met in The Sorcerer's Stone.Let's not waste hope with greater expectations.

How do some people get so hung up on labels - e.g., gay, liberal, female? When you understand how the labels came to be, they aren't as scary and threatening.

Cloak of invisibility and wand would be most useful I think

Whist at Hogwarts I recommend our esteemed leaders steal the cloak of invisibility and Harry's wand. The former would be helpful for hiding US special forces when in Pakistan and the latter useful for magicing away the budget defecit. Alas whilst the film makes a great Saturday night out for the family come Monday morning we face the same old problems. C'est la vie.

Really nice article. But,

Really nice article. But, thinking deeper...Harry Potter would be nice else where. For example...you know people who make Plumber Jobs right? imagine that if all the powers and magic from harry potter came up to this guys? "Vingardio Leviossa" and get the job done...

I will tell that to the guys from Desentupidora, they will laugh about that...but would be easily and very nice, dont ya think?

Would you want to live in Harry Potter's world?

As much as I enjoyed reading Harry Potter, thanks to my grandchildren turning me onto him, I would not want to live in his world.

Our world has the "have" and "have not's" as a function of money, birth, religious or political power, his world divided the "have" and "have not's" as a function of birth, you were born with the power or you were not. And those born with the power looked down upon those born without the power. Even the good guys looked down on the "muggles".

In our world each individual does have a chance to improve life for himself/herself or for their families. It might be hard but it is possible. In his world you either were born with it or you did not have it.

Yes, birth can make a difference in our world but individuals can overcome that difference, regardless of what that difference make be.

Take the "commoners" who marry into Royalty as an example. They were not born Royalty but they became Royalty by way of marriage.

Another more common example are individuals who were born in slums and became successful in their own rights in business, the political arena or the scientific community, or even as writers and journalists. It wasn't easy but it can be done.

In Harry Potter's world it could not be done.

In Harry Potter's world the only thing worse than being born a muggle was being born a squib, who were all shown as despicable characters, the real dogs

Would you like part 2

sorry, part of my comment was cut off.

So it would not be fun to live in Harry Potter's world unless you were born among the privileged few, with magical ability.

Although I loved reading Harry Potter with my grandchildren I would not want to live in his world. Our world, with all it's ugliness, is still a much better place to live than Harry's world.

Forget Harry Potter send for Jack Bauer

The Hill does not need Harry Potter it needs Jack Bauer. After all he does have a unique negotiating style. I cannot imagine anyone on the Hill having the courage to try out their song and dance routines on Jack.

24 Series 9 "Balance The Budget" Opening Scene

The President - "Jack we have 24 hours to get Congress and The Senate to balance the budget or the rating agencies will downgrade our debt"
Jack Bauer -"No problem Mr President you can rely on me"
The President - "And Jack you need to make the Tea Party see sense
Jack Bauer - "Not a problem Mr President"

It would make great entertainment too

Send the Hill to Hogwarts

In my point
The leaves are a turnin’ and you know what that means. Back to Hogwarts for all you young wizards in trainin’.
And at a time such as this, there’s only one place to get all your school needs: Diagon Alley. We got it all. From books to brooms, cauldrons to quills. Over thirty stores and pubs just waitin’ to serve ya.
And we’re given special deals to all first years. Get the ingredients for spells class along with a cauldron to stew ‘em in for half of the regular price. And if that aint enough, we’ll though in a sheaf of our brand new, super light weight parchment. Just right for sendin’ letters back home for mum and dad. They’ll get there faster and your owl’ll love you for it! What’s that? You ain’t got an owl yet? Well get yer wee self into Eeylops Owl Emporium.
Like they say “you need a bird to send out the word” come on down to Diagon Alley! After all, where else you gonna get this stuff?
Best Regards:

well!

My brains were about to "expelliarmus" after dealing with all the people that were here when we went.
Could barely even move, plus it was raining for most of the time. But hey, what can you do. Was really cool to see the world of Harry Potter. Definitely try the lisa ann and Pumpkin Juice if you go, as both are awesome, especially the Butterbeer. Everything was ridiculously expensive, as expected, but worth the trip.

Send the Hill to Hogwarts

Rogin's reporting strongly suggests that, for the sake of relations with Beijing, the administration will do anything to avoid approving the sale. This is extremely shortsighted. jenna jameson, a Pacific analyst at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, makes a very convincing argument that now is the perfect time for the sale to go through. If we wait until the F-16 line is shut down, the only option left for aiding Taipei in accordance with the Taiwan Relations Act will be to sell Taiwan more sophisticated fighters, which would make Beijing even madder. The military leadership on the mainland is likely to change soon, so if China protests a sale by freezing military contacts now, the damage will be less than it would be later. Anderson lays out several other reasons, from the perspective of democratic politics in America and Taiwan as well as the internal politics of the Chinese Communist Party,, "if it is in the interests of all involved parties to maintain the current tranquillity in the Straits, then it will actually be better to push through the sale of F-16s to Taiwan now, no matter how counterintuitive that may seem."

Who would the Tea Party be?

But who in the Harry Potter fims would the Tea Party be. No one really fits do they? And they seem to be quite impervious to reason so not sure how much good going to href=http://www.the-peacock-bar.co.uk/chocolate-making-classes-london>lessons London would do them even if it was at Hogwarts.
