Outside the Wire

Three months beyond the base in Afghanistan.

IMAGES BY TIVADAR DOMANICZKY | JULY 28, 2011

Foreign Policy is pleased to present this unique and remarkable collection of photographs, largely taken on iPhones (or in this case, with a Kodak Playsport), of the lives of U.S. Marines in Helmand province in 2010 and 2011 and of the Afghans they interacted with. It is by no means a comprehensive look at 10 years of war, but rather an evocative and profound slice of life -- at the beginning of the end of the longest conflict in U.S. history. This is part four of a five-part series.

Marines from the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion in direct support of the Marines in Battalion 1/8, prepare to leave for a daily mission to de-mine a new road in the Musa Qala district, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on Oct. 30, 2010.

Tivadar Domaniczky is a photographer and audio artist. A selection of his Basetrack photos are now featured in a digital book. Basetrack is supported by a 2010 News Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Congratulations, FP!

I looked at all the photos, and must congratulate you for your excellent ANTI-WAR photo series.

Anyone looking through this series has to think seriously about why we are occupying this desolate land, and trying to upgrade these ancient barbarians.

Why not just leave them alone?

Nation Building/CI...Huh...Good God Y'all..What is it good for?

@ORMONDOTVOS

I completely agree with you: anyone who looks through this series AND has absolutely no other knowledge about Afghanistan AND who thinks that people are "ancient barbarians" because they live a "desolate land" will certainly come to the conclusions that you have come to.

After all, "ignorance is bliss".

Yeah have to agree with you here. We come in and think we're doing a good thing when we should just be simply leaving them alone. What exactly are we trying to achieve with this prison compound? I was reading on a social media marketing forum, 1 in 5 Afghans feel helpless.

The point of war

If you look at the American involvement in the war against terror are pictures like this helping us to foster a national pride? Are we losing our national heritage - can we still enjoy our culture - pepsi, coke, red velvet cake recipe, NFL etc. It's a great image, but we should probably be focusing more on our own backyard.

Yes, leave them alone

These wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have cost the life's of over 1 million innocent civilians! How is that making America safe? How is that democracy?

Those 1 million people have family and friends that care about them. Imagine coming back from the store one day to find your entire and house blown to bits along with your wife and kids. You'd be pretty pissed off about that, and there's a lot of people in that situation that could easily be radicalized.

As I type this up on my sylvania netbook I can't help how furious I get when I think about how Afghanistan is such a big waste of time, resources, money, lives you name it.. I think U.S.A Troops in this base camp are exhausted. They have been at war too long. The war gives bad influences to the soldier. I heard that a lot of soldiers got confused when they got back home. This is the right time to go home. Imagine what the picture looks like when the soldiers are outside the wire at night while they are guarding their base. I think they will know what to do when their enemies are coming, but I am wondering do they know what to do when they get bitten by mosquitoes at night. Do they carry bestmosquitorepellent to protect them from this kind of attack.

The line of demarcation

The line of demarcation between safety and the real Afghanistan is simply a series of barriers and walls that make up the base’s force-protection posture. Every soldier who crosses that threshold wears body armor, gloves and glasses, and carries a rifle that makes them resemble Robo-Cop as they enter the Afghani badlands.
