There's panic in the streets of London as a spate of rioting and looting that had erupted in poorer parts of the city over the weekend spread to new neighborhoods on the night of Monday, Aug. 8. Other cities, including Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham, and Bristol have also seen violent disturbances. The unrest kicked off on Saturday after a protest over the Aug. 4 fatal shooting by police of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old from the Tottenham neighborhood in northern London.
Violence reached a new level with the first confirmed fatality of the riots: a 26-year-old man was shot in a car in Croydon, South London, on Monday night and died in a hospital.
The riots, now in their fourth consecutive day, are being led by gangs of young people and organized in part via BlackBerry instant messaging, the encrypted messages from which are more difficult for the police to monitor. The violence is steadily escalating: smashed windows and looted stores have led to the arson of vehicles and buildings and mass confrontations with riot police. At least 563 people have been arrested thus far in London, while 138 have been arrested in Birmingham. About 30 police officers were reported injured as of daytime Monday, but an additional 44 police officers were injured that same night.
Many in Britain are blaming the violence on recent economic turmoil and longstanding tensions between the police and the city's Afro-Caribbean population, of which Duggan was a member. According to one minister of Parliament, David Winnick, the relationship between police and minority communities along with "continuing deprivation, growing unemployment, a feeling of lack of opportunity [...] makes a pretty toxic mix."
Prime Minister David Cameron cut his Tuscan vacation short to return to London for a Cabinet-level meeting on Tuesday to address the violence. He announced a tripling of police on London's streets -- officers on duty will rise from 6,000 on Monday night to 16,000 on Tuesday.. Additionally, Cameron has recalled Parliament to for an emergency meeting on Thursday. The Metropolitan Police have reported receiving over 20 million calls, four times the normal number, on Monday night and have dubbed Monday night's violence the worst in living memory, according to senior police officers.
Londoners have joined forces with authorities to clean up the city, organizing via social media, including a new Twitter account, @Riotcleanup, which gained over 77,000 followers in less than a day. Forbes blogger Parmy Olson alluded to the famous London World War II-era slogan, "Keep Calm and Carry On," that captured local spirit:
The initiative offers locals a chance to confront the powerlessness they may feel about remedying a chaotic situation, and tap into the getting-on-with-it spirit of Londoners made famous by the city's reaction to the Blitz in World War II. The idea is, throw anything at Britain's capital and locals will handle it with aplomb and some irreverence.
The problem is, however, that there are a lot of people still throwing things in Britain's capital.

I'm a pacifist, and I tolerant toward all nations and confessions, but I believe that there is no one to blame for the situation that happened in the UK, but the British government. Making all privileges for emigrants to live there, pay them money even if they are not working - all that led to what we have witnessed.

It will keep on spreading........
The riots started in response to police brutality (not just the shooting but the beating of peaceful protestors by the police at the initial peaceful demonstrations against the shooting) and the only government response has been more police brutality, threats to lock up people for talking about police brutality on Twitter and promises to make rioters pay.
Justice stops riots, not further brutality.

you're joking right?
These riots were started the same way every single riot in America starts.... minorities who think they are aggrieved want to have some fun by taking out their rage on productive members of society. Police brutality??? The British have done nothing to quell these riots because political correctness has neutered every cop. What world do you live in? Have you seen the flash mobs in the USA? Maybe not because the MSM is not allowed to report on them. If not check Drudge on Sunday because they'll be at least 3 more this weekend!!!

You have no idea
Police brutality? what on earth are you talking about? the riots have started because a whole generation of people have been forgotten about with no opportunities, no jobs and no future. Dont get me wrong I am not sympathetic these idiots are making things worse by believing they are entitled to everything they have no idea how to work hard and make their own way in life. Its no wonder the west is stagnating in materialism, in a over sexed, shallow, lowbrow culture. I would welcome police brutality some of those idiots need a good hiding.

er actually we need to look again
Look again at some of the pictures.
It almost looks like standard regulation black or grey hoodie/tracksuit and pumps. But the clothes all look new and freshly pressed and the shoes look new with no scuff marks. Look at the guys with the aerosol cans in the pictures. Do these really look like typical rioters?
Just ask people who have lived through previous riots (try Northern Ireland if you can't think of anywhere). Rioters turn up in the scruffiest clothes. There's something not right about this. This is more than minorities rebelling over injustice.

Shoot them all.
Crybabies and thugs, all, in their brand-name athletic gear and coordinating via their BlackBerries.
So sick of people who do nothing, complaining about what they're not given by the rest of us. If they won't leave the entitlement mentality behind, beat it out of them. If that doesn't work, shoot them in the head and move on.
(These cretins are a very slim minority. Most of the poor and working class are proud, hard-working people. Those that aren't should be herded up and thrown in the sea, we'd all be better for it.)

Agreed...But....
The Globalizer...
I agree with what you're saying about people sitting around and judging others, and not doing anything more. You are 100% right when you say this. But, isn't "shooting people in the head" just stooping down to their level. If I wanted to I could just play flight simulator games all day long, judge people, and do nothing. But shooting people in the head is absolutely not the correct thing to do. How is it making anything better?

We can't shoot them...
As much as it would make my day to see the chav scum of London (and believe me mate I've lived among them and they are truly worthy of the firing squad) lined up in rows and executed on the streets, this isn't appropriate to a civil society.
What would be appropriate is to remove the reproductive rights of chronic benefits claimants. Spay council mums and the trackie-wearing mongrels who breed to them.

A certain element are just looking for trouble
I understand that there are racial tensions between the Metropolitan Police and the Afro Caribbean community in Tottenham added to the fact that it's been revealed recently that the accused man who was shot by the police as it turns out was not actually in posession of a firearm at the time suggests that the trouble is going to get even worse in the next 24-48 hours. I can also understand the disorder and need to protest, but needless violence, looting and burning of shops has nothing to do with this man's unjustified treatment by the police. People like these are just looking for a reason to cause mayhem. Just think about the disruption to ordinary folk's lives, people who simply want to go about their daily activities. The added insuranceexcess to normal homeowners and car drivers as a result, notwithstanding the harm done to police officers who are just doing their jobs and added strain on public resources ensures that there's absolutely zero justification for these morons actions.

It's not racial
I truly do not believe this has anything to do with race. Have you seen the filth in Britain? White/black/etc they are absolutely vile. This is about a parasitic underclass overstepping its bounds quite dramatically, I would hate for the issue to get derailed by "racism."

absolutely vile?
Hey, you forgot the cliche about the teeth. Americans insults of the British (or English in this case - correct me if I am wrong but the riots didn't spread to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) rarely exclude views on their teeth. The constant top dating advice such as "brush your teeth every day" and "try to shower at least once a day" is usually prevalent too.
But to get back to the original point, this is definitely not a racial issue between different groups in the community. But it is racial in as much as there have been several recent episodes where the police have killed or injured people, and those people have been black. There are far fewer examples of police brutality against whites than against blacks.

Dispatch from the periphery of the madness...
No trouble in my city as yet (touch wood) but I've gotta say, it felt a bit weird to be coming home through empty streets past boarded up shops. The atmosphere is not tense exactly, just... odd, almost as if people are waiting for it to happen here.
From my observations of the last few days, I would say that the three main motivations for the people doing this are as follows -
People who have a grievance against the police/ politicians/ society as a whole (minority)
Scumbags who think it's a laugh to wreck the homes and livelihoods of ordinary people (majority)
People who want new trainers and Rolex watches (majority)
The second two overlap somewhat.
I'd REALLY love to see Cameron hug THESE hoodies :)

According to BNP/EDL, Christians can't riot!!!
If one hears the message of right wing elements in Britain (and much of Europe), the problem is Muslim immigration. Without them, Christian Europe would live in peace and tranquility. Unfortunately, the rioting by predominantly Black Christians against predominantly White Christians in London and throughout the UK shows that this is definitely not the case.
Also, let us not forget the fanatical anger against the Left by White Christian Terrorist Anders Breivik! His attack shows that Christian violence is not just limited to riots in the UK.
However, the right will never admit that other more dangerious problems exist (black vs white, left vs. right), and will keep dreaming their genocidal ideas of a Muslim-free Europe that will usher in a new era of peace and tranquility. I hope they get caught in these riots!!!

Reactionary government
Well Brits voted in the Tories who promptly decided to suck up to the bond holders and institute an "austerity" program on the backs of the "lower orders". They were stupid enough to think they could do so without suffering any consequences. Now they have an insurrection by the lower orders on their hands (poor Mr. Cameron had to cut short his vacation) that they will probably repress with brutality and force. Nothing will improve, but rather things will get worse and the UK will become a disjointed, dysfunctional society going nowhere. And Brits (upper order Brits that is) have no one to blame but themselves. (Do I see the ghost of Karl Marx hovering over the reading room of the British Museum smiling to himself?).

That is awful
What is going on is just awful. There is enough crime and disaster in our world, why to create even more?!! I think nothing justifies what is happening in London right now. Innocent people who have nothing to do with the politics, racism should not be involved in that at all. The violence is not the solution, it only makes the situation worse. What is the piont in burning and crashing the buildings and killing people?! How can that help? I really hope that it will soon stop and the consequences will not be tragic.

It was all expected
This reminds me of the riots that took place in Britain in 1981. Some of the triggers were just the same - a generation of people failed by the education system and who see no prospects, just a life on the dole.
I was at secondary school during the 1981 riots and although I did not participate (at the time I lived in a rural town where there were no riots) I fully understood the feelings.
In the 1980's, social mobility began to decline in Britain and it has declined substantially since then. I was lucky, I got through the door just before it slammed shut, a working class kid who got to university and now has a very comfortable middle class lifestyle.
But I am not sure that the same opportunities exist now. Propsoects for the working class have diminished considerably. The chickens are cominghome to roost.
Now this is not to justify the violence one iota. There is no justification. And of course a lot of the rioters are there primarily to loot and steal, not to ptotest about their propspects. But there's no point in walking around shouting "they should stop, they should stop." It's happening whether you like it or not, and you need to deal with it. Dealing with it starts by giving young people a future that they believe in.

I was in Clapham Junction that night it was surreal
Excellent portrait photography (portrait of a riot that is) as always. I was in Clapham Junction that night and it was surreal not what I thought a riot would be at all.
The rioters - mainly young kids but with a number of older heads too - were targeting property so Debenhams (a UK department store) attracted 100's of looters whilst the trendy London cocktail barand nightclub next door to it did not even have a window smashed (despite having alcohol). But there were anomalies Party Superstore (London hen party & corporate events costumes shop) got looted even though the goods had little value. Why? Because the shop also stocked lots of kids masks meant for birthday parties but suddenly essential clothing for any rioters. Mobile phone shops were also very popular as were newsagents for cigarettes which obviously have a high sales vale.
The atmosphere? Not intimidating at all in fact the kids were treating it exactly like like some huge outdoor Christmas party for everyone under 16. Also there were so many girl looters. The looters split by stereotypes too. The girls left the shops carrying lots of clothing, perfumes and jewellery and the men went for phones and TVs.
Will the rioters have to face the music. Oh yes all political parties are singing from the same song book on this one. Literally we have overnight courts and people are being jailed till trial as opposed to being given parole which the normal practice. The sentences are stiff too. No one wants a repeat.
