China's Ultimate Fighting Crickets

Inside China's strange obsession with battling bugs.

BY JONATHAN BROWNING | OCTOBER 19, 2011

Forget horseracing or card games: During the Tang Dynasty, betting on crickets was the way to gamble. Over a thousand years later, the tradition continues in modern China, although the gambling aspect has been banned by the government. (Not that this is really stopping the practice.)

Photographer Jonathan Browning ventured to the Superbowl of sanctioned cricket-fighting competitions, as well as the bustling markets where customers gather to purchase their chirping would-be champions. And these insects are no ordinary crickets. Only one breed is used for fighting, and their provenance is important to buyers in the know. "Crickets from Shandong Province are renowned for their prowess and bravery," says Browning. "Maybe there's not much difference between crickets to the average Westerner, but in China, they are also kept as pets."

Above, a participant holds a losing cricket outside the Xilai Ranch at the "Yu Sheng Cup" cricket-fighting tournament in Luhua on Chongming Island. Held during China's week-long national holiday and organized by the Chongming Tourist Department and local government, a total of 16 groups participated. While betting on the games is illegal, the winning team was awarded a certificate and 10,000RMB ($1,500 USD).

Chinese

I don't know if there's something like the Rosetta Stone in the Chinese culture, but what I know is that many customs are many centuries old. Much older than the young american ones.

I do respect all of it. Well, most of it.

I'm not going to write here and bash China. It's part of the world's learning process, multicultural, to be understanding with each others's culture and language.

The Chinese customs and habits are a kind of its own and very very old. I just ask for some respect for the Chinese people, their language, and of course their culture. Reading the comments above makes me worry about that learning process I'm talking about!

dinner?

I saw some of these fights in China, but the way that first guy is holding up the cricket with the chopsticks, you would think it was lunch or dinner. I would not want this in my diet though. Anyways, China is an old country and they still have some old traditions that do not make much sense when it comes to the modern world. As weird as this one is, it is very unique and think it is what makes China, China.

Match Time

I wonder how long a cricket fight lasts for? It seems pretty barbaric to me. Why not race them or something like they do with cockroaches.

When President Barack Obama

When President Barack Obama and senior administration officials proudly announced that all U.S. troops in Iraq would leave by the end of the year, there was no mention of the millions of Iraqis for sympathy messages who were forced to flee their homes by the U.S. invasion or the thousands who risked their lives by working directly for the U.S. military. http://google.com/news

Shanghai Lvhua Country Cricket competition

There are 16 teams participate in the competition, the number of which is more than before. And these teams are from Beijing, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Shandong, Shanghai etc., respectively

Inside the 13th century, the Southern Song Dynasty pm Jia Sidao even wrote a how-to guide for your blood sport. Jia's dependence on cricket fighting is assumed to own led to nov the empire. In the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) China's Communist government banned cricket fighting as being a bourgeois predilection, but it's now having a revival among a youngerworkout programgeneration wanting to embrace genuinely Chinese pastimes.
