Libya’s Sexual Revolution

How the uprising turned young Libyan men from hopeless layabouts into marriageable heroes.

BY ELLEN KNICKMEYER | OCTOBER 26, 2011

JANZOUR, Libya – When it comes to love, Muammar al-Qaddafi's Libya was unlucky for unmarried 33-year-old truck driver Ahmed Nori Faqiar. His looks would have benefited if his parents could ever have sprung for a dentist. Lack of means forced him to live unhappily at his childhood home well into adulthood. Marriage, a home of his own, kids -- all are dreams that the wiry Libyan had long ago steeled himself to stop hoping for.

"Before, I was not even daring to look at girls as wife material, because I knew I could not afford" to get married, say Faqiar now.

These days, though, Faqiar wears the mismatched camouflage of Libya's rebels and a dashing bandana on his head, pirate-style. He carries a gun. He is a veteran of battles for Libyans' freedom from Qaddafi's regime -- and it's the women who are talking to him.

"Girls around the area come up to you and say, ‘Thank you! You made us proud, you made us happy,'" Faqiar told me one night recently. He spoke on the sidelines of a camel and couscous feast that the people in this Tripoli suburb threw for several thousand young rebels, after slaughtering 10 camels.

From a specially raised dais, speakers praised the young rebel fighters late into the evening.  Hundreds of excited young women and girls in head scarves mingled near rifle-toting young men, a novelty in this conservative country that was overwhelming to members of both genders in the crowd that night. "It's like a wedding!" Faqiar exclaimed, shaking his head in surprise.

Relations between Libyan men and women -- deeply distorted by the eccentric Libyan leader's refusal to provide normal opportunities for Libya's young people -- have changed "100 percent" in the days since Qaddafi fell, the young rebel said. His comrades listening around him voiced agreement.

"Thank God," Faqiar added.

Nearby, young women -- a group of cousins and neighbors, clustered together, in long skirts and shirts and head coverings -- said the same, and laughed about taking their pick of a husband from among the rebels when the war was done.

Spoils of war

Good for those revolutionaries who weren't killed or injured but can't help feeling that the cream of the brave ones didn't make it. A lot of men were culled on both sides thus helping the gender balance. The later ones to the fight are now benefiting. Such is the irony of war.

Libia is at peace

Finally, libya is at peace. Ghadaffi the mad dog is dead and people can walk the streets without fear of being tortured or killed. Maybe if ghadaffi had just gone online with the help of some motherly loving and , much easier than scouring the libyan backstreets for a female. Then he wouldn't have flipped out and and caused a civil uprising. Thank god for NATO!

an article anybody who knows the truth about Libya cannot believe this article.
Newly-wed Libyans got a gift in an amount of US$ 60,000 by the Livyan government unter Gaddafi's rule/government in order to be able to buy their first home/apartment and as a help to start a new family..

It was considered a law in Libya having a home is their human right.

Libya had no external debt and medical treatments were free in Libya.

Western countries can only dream of such things - especially USA where almost 50 million people are without any health insurance.

How can anyone believe such an article???
Is everything written for veiling governmental interests ??

RE: young men in libya

I completely agree with you miramre..this article is full bs

1. There is no electricity bill in... Libya; electricity is free
for all its citizens.

2. There is no interest on loans, banks in Libya are
state-owned and loans given
to all its citizens at 0% interest by law.

3. Home considered a human right in Libya –
Gaddafi vowed that his parents
would not get a house until everyone in Libya had a
home. Gaddafi’s father has
died while him, his wife and his mother are still living
in a tent.

4. All newlyweds in Libya receive $60,000 Dinar (US$
50,000 ) by the government
to buy their first apartment so to help start up the
family.

5. Education and medical treatments are free in
Libya. Before Gaddafi only 25%
of Libyans are literate. Today the figure is 83%.

6. Should Libyans want to take up farming career,
they would receive farming
land, a farming house, equipments, seeds and
livestock to kick- start their farms
– all for free.

7. If Libyans cannot find the education or medical
facilities they need in Libya,
the government funds them to go abroad for it –
not only free but they get US
$2, 300/mth accommodation and car allowance.

8. In Libyan, if a Libyan buys a car, the government
subsidized 50% of the price.

9. The price of petrol in Libya is $0. 14 per liter.

10. Libya has no external debt and its reserves
amount to $150 billion – now
frozen globally.

11. If a Libyan is unable to get employment after
graduation the state would
pay the average salary of the profession as if he or
she is employed until
employment is found.

12. A portion of Libyan oil sale is, credited directly to
the bank accounts of all
Libyan citizens.

13. A mother who gave birth to a child receive US
$5 ,000

14. 40 loaves of bread in Libya costs $ 0.15

15. 25% of Libyans have a university degree

16. Gaddafi carried out the world’s largest irrigation
project, known as the Great
Man-Made River project, to make water readily
available throughout the desert
country.

Seems like there is no evidence of a sexual revolution reported here - just another biased and misogynistic patriarchcal put-down on the role of young Libyan women as sexual or marriage vessels for the 'rebels'.

Young people in the arab region

The Arab region has the second-largest percentage of young people in the world. Almost two out of every three Arabs are under 30, a level exceeded only in sub-Saharan Africa. And the Middle East and North Africa boast both the highest youth unemployment and unemployment overall on the planet.

Years ago, political scientists began using the term "waithood" to describe the crippled outlook for the young generations of the Arab world. Unable to find jobs, or jobs that paid a living wage, millions of young Arabs were fated to live unhappily at home, unable to afford marriage. And in conservative Islamic societies, marriage for many is the only launch there is into independence, dignity, and a life of one's own.

Libya's sexual revolution

how can a cesent website print such an article -

or is the intention to please the US government ?
or to feed some arrogant feelings ?

Or to influence peoples' mind insofar that Moslems are barbarians ?
And especially US citizen are the most liberal and democratic people ?

Anyone who has lived in Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia and Libya (before this created war on it) knows that most Moslems don't marry more than one woman because to feel equal for two or three woman is impossible. Thats was the basic thought. Also usually girls/women are choosing their spuse - how they do it, many times it is really very very romantic. And parents do care of their children usually much much more than the average people in Western countries.

Even I am living in a Western country - Middle of Europe and a born Catholic - I have to admit that there is the social behaviour of Moslems generally speaking much more decent than in many many other countries. And Christinas are much much more accepted and respected than Moslems in Europe.

Wich intention lies behind such an article ?

The writer seems to have no real knowledge of other cultures ...

the worst article...in this magazine ever

The actions described here are full of misery brought by the interest groups on Muslim women and men. How can a fully dressed Muslim woman come in such times to watch the "liberators" and stare at them with the hope of future marriage? She would then have no shame, but they don't for they are brought up to respect themselves and behave properly.

Was Qaddafi such a bad leader that did not want his population to grow and prove more prosperous? Was he against the young men go dating young women even if they are poor and unable to sustain?

As I know almost every one in Libya was guaranteed a right to have home and was subsidized for that.. The story by this poor, but now "free" rebellion seems to be made up.

Even though the article is invalid and very optimistic to find supporters, it is an exception in this magazine to have such ill-intended works...

Misleading title

I agree with the posters who point out that "sexual revolution" may not be the best term to describe these changes, however important they may be. Sexual revolution implies a change in attitudes towards things like sex, relations between men and women, marriage, etc. This article doesn't offer any of evidence that attitudes towards these topics have changed (maybe they HAVE changed, but the article doesn't discuss it). Indeed, it seems that married status is STILL seen as an essential precondition for young men to achieve any sort of professional status or independence, and that open flirting between sexes is STILL taboo. The only difference is that men's marriage prospects have improved for the time being.

Whether it's rebels or tyrants, women like winners.

In sports, women run into the arms of the winner. It doesn't matter if the winners are white or black, of this city or that city. Women wanna put out to winner-males, not loser-males.

When Germans invaded France, French women threw themselves at German soldiers. When Americans liberated France, French women went with American men.
During the Fascist Era, Italian women swooned at macho Mussolini. After the fall of Fascism, Italian women threw themselves at Americans for money and/or pleasure.
During the rise of militarist Japan, Japanese women respected their men. After the war, Japanese women went with big strong American GIs, white and black.
Nothing new here.

free medical treatment and other remarks to AEIMBAK and FP2011

yes, medical treatments were free - until this war started and Western countries, speak NATO put
children hospitals into ashes
demolished completely the infrastructure in Libyia
which lead to:
not enough drinking water supply
not enough electricity,
And not to speak of the pulluted soil by radioactive substances which the US warheads use for bombing: DU material = depleted uranium, which lasts in the sooil for approx. 2,4 million of years (not to mention how this tiny particles travel through/with the air; see Fukushima,

Not only Libya had free medical treatment for its citizen, Saudi Arabia has it still too.
But Saudi Arabia allows US military bases on its soil.
Libya didn't want any foreign state should have a base in its country.
(Please see the history of Libya and what the Italians did to the Libyans = massacre of some thenshousands of people !!)

Libya: quite contrary to most Western countries:
Libya had no debt and with its population = approx. 6,5 million people, they could afford it
because THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY DEBTS !

The money of Libya were several billions US Dollars and had been frozen - it seems it will go like the money of Iraq, where nobody in USA feels responsible, or to speak frankly: Necons were feeded.
And neither the US citizen nor the Iraq citizen got even the slightest glimpse that anything had been done with it for the benefit of the people.
Iraq was too complete demolished in its infrastructure and it still hasn't reached yet the infrastructure of the time before 1990.

How sad that such an article is printed, put into public.

Why no real reports what happened in Libya ?
Why no real reporters on the front ?

Why does the mainstream media and FP is a such is just working for the Neocons and not in the public interest ??
A shame for any decent journalist ...
because the ethics of journalists are on stake ...

I would really wish that better articles are put in FP ...

Libya and Western countries

yes, it is true ...
and that's why far too many people - who have read enough about the developments of other countries and their history and even visited some places in Libya - don't believe what has been told by mainstream media.

Never forget: Libya had no debt. It didn't get involved in wars (outside wars like USA and bringing the whole country into financial crisis and thats only to feed the arrogance of some necons and politicans whereas the population doesn't have any good outcome of these wars; except burdened by debts and too less jobs together with the pollution of air and water and soil brought by big oil companies - see the Mexican Gulf !!)).

The irrigation project was one of the biggest in this area of Gaddafi - to make the Sahara green ...
Also Libya supported some African states with money ....

Some Western countries don't like other countries who aren't indebted or not so much indebted.
And also: resources are a factor to start wars on llies ... like Iraq and even Afghanistan ...(who knows ? weren't the politicans too quick with their "presentation" ??)
And not to forget: Africa and Middle East are the newer battle fields for the USA (and some European states too) to show China ....

Anybody can read or should at least to be able ...

reading about other countries holds the key to distinguish between truth and lies ...

Libya - women - education - revolution

fact can be found on decent and reliable internet websites; these are displaying the demographic as well as economic facts of a lot of countries on our earth. US governments like to accumulate information on other countries, so there is no difficulty in findiung. For example the IMF.

Education inclusive university studies were free in Libya - before the bombing took place.
Some European countries have it too.

Women in Libya - before this murder and bombing took place - were quite too academic educated and worked especially in the fields of law.
Don't forget: Gaddafi preferred women too for his personal security - quite contrary to Western countries, were men always are preferred.
Approx. 25% of the Libyan population is/were academic educated.

So maybe it sounds very unusuall for United States and Great Britain that no university fees have to be paid however, as I said, some European countries too either don't request fees or very low ones to be allowed to take university lectures, tuition and admission for exams (only the high school grades maybe at some European universities are set). What I say is: that university admisson in Europe isn't so costly than in Great Britain or in USA.
As I said above: these facts are easily verified through the Internet university we4bsites. No secret.

The life expectancy is quite high: 74,9 years for men and 78,58 for women.

I don't think that women are at present very interested on these "guerillas" who bombed (NATO), murdered their men and children.
They have other important things to think:
for example: were to get drinking warer, were to get some food and if someone is sick were to find a still working hospital.

I am quite very much astonished, that some remarks on this article shows open that its writers have no real knowledge of other countries and cultures and take some articles at face value instead of looking for facts.

Anybody who praises the rebels that had no respect to their own leader then exhibits total disregard for human rights. No matter how bad Gaddafi was, he should have been taken before the ICC ipso facto of the crimes he committed. Killing him in cold blood was a huge mistake that Libyans will have to pay maybe not now but in the near future. Okay back to this article that tries to see the war that occurred through sexual lenses is a fallacy and wrong argument since the same rebels raped the same women that the writer claims the women love.

before writing what you have written on October 31, 2011 at 10:20 ET you should have really read history.
You didn't.

First of all: just remember on what or better to say why and by which people the United States has been founded.

Second: the Christan people are the most aggressive if they go to their fundamentalism on our earth.
For this you can easily consult the history of the United States and Europe.
Put a special remark on the history of Spain when the Moslems where there and what a massacre has been unfolded when the Christian political leaders started to take over the country. Oh my God !

And for our present days:
Who made the Taliban so great? And why did the USA support the Talibans ?
Which price requested USA for this support ? And when the Taliban refused ...

Deal with history and read more before you write hatred words which all in all are on a false flag.

By the way: I am a born Roman-Catholic. So don't tell me anything about Christians.

Ah don't forget to count the several millions of death people in Afghanistan and Irak, Pakistan and yet also Libya where USA was leading the NATO.

Don't forget to count the about 3,5 millions of refugees created by USA which fleed from Irak.
Or the raped Iraki women - raped by US soldiers.

In Libya alone were about 20,000 sorties flown, you can easily search how many bombs each sort is carrying.
Or you can ask where all the money of Irak has been gone ?
Stealing in a great manner I would say. And nothing of it neither for the Irakis nor for the US citizen. What a shame !

Or you could ask how much pollution of air and soil added USA with its wars.
But this doesn't matter, if you are an US citizen: USA doesn't want to hear about climate change and air and water pollution.
In Vietnam are still the pollution effects countable done by US bombings with Napalm.

And speaking of Christans: the Klu-Klux-Klan is still available for discriminating other races except the white one. In the South of the United States.

It was shocking news to many nations and people around the world that the long running dictatorship of Gaddafi in Libya has been fought by its own citizens in order to have their own life and freedom. The civil unrest might have staggered the world into thinking that this might start a worldwide cycle and nations especially in that region would eventually seek their redresses and grievances into the streets of their country.

Before the fall of the dictatorship, Libya was a nation ruled by single governance where human rights and freedom had been limited to those who were within the cycle. The youth were never given much importance especially if you were not born into one of the wealthier families, or wealthy affiliates, in the region. Unemployment was the number one problem and many young men were not given the liberty to choose their profession simply because they were not sent to school.

A lot of these young men just become a part of the crowd who accepted their fate of being left out in the society ruled by the wealthy and the powerful worldwide brands of the world. Many of these men have dreams of building their own families and would like to know how it feels to be a father but most are afraid or simply do not have the looks or the money to show their future wife’s family their supposedly eligibility in marrying her.

Society’s norms always require the family of the bride to look for the best looking and the better of men to marry their daughters and many of those belonging to the lowest level of finances hardly had the chance to marry someone. That was before. But as the regime was overthrown by the people it has become an entirely different scene for many of these street kids. These simple masses have turned into a group of soldiers fighting for their chance to equal rights and dignity.

They were the forefront of liberating the society from years of total obedience and self-sacrifice. Their dreams are now starting to be realized and the nation has become a quiet witness to the many chances that are slowly taking effect. Being a part of the doba rebel group did nothing but increased these young men’s confidence and enabled them to fight for their dreams and aspirations. Instead of being the wrong arm in the government, they have become the unsung heroes of their nation who helped shape the ideal ideologies of many of their brothers and sisters in faith.

They have become the chosen ones who helped protect the rights of the many citizens who have suffered injustice in the hands of the tyrants. Now many people, young and old speak up to them to offer their gratitude and thanks for bringing them into an era of liberation and relief from tyranny and oppression. In lieu with this, many of the women are now seeking to marry into one of the great rebels who have given them a choice for a better life.

the true challenge for Libya

There's no doubt that the true challenge for Libya is actually starting once the NATO’s air superiority is taken away. Libyans should not permit numerous unelected, NATO intalled puppets to control Libya as American nations take advantage of Libya’s oil and various other PE treatment resources.

Another misleading title

Typical Washington Post style propaganda here. What sexual revolution are you talking about, dear author?

Nothing "sexual" here, just NATO raping the country for their own interests. Please don't be too obvious with your "creative" propaganda, Ms. Knickmeyer.

Wake up folks,
Lisa

Relations between

Relations between Libyan men and women — deeply distorted by the eccentric Libyan leader's refusal to provide normal opportunities for Libya's young people — have changed "100 percent" in the days since Qaddafi fell, the young rebel said. His comrades listening around him voiced agreement.

The Libyan Revolution is so

The Libyan Revolution is so Primate. Hanuman langurs are organized into single male troops in which an alpha-male has total control over a sisterhood of females and their young all sired by the autocrat. Once the male offspring reach maturity they leave the troop and form a gang on the troops periphery. Periodically the male gang will invade the troop and try to oust the troop leader. During the chaos the bachelor males rape the females until one of their number succeeds in asserting william hill control and driving the others out assuming the alpha-male position. In extremis human behavior is not much different.

We may think that this only

We may think that this only happens in places like Libya, but on some very real levels many American Males are the same way. You come from North Carolina I take it. If so then you must be very aware of the martial culture of the south. Think about it. It's not that different. Watch a few movies about the Civil War and even though some are more or less given to liberal does of Hollywoodism, they still have much truth to them. How many young Southern boys went off to wars cheered on by their Southern Freebet Belles. I'm pretty sure that it stirred up some juice in those boys on the sidelines to want to go to. It isn't until they come home minus limbs that that attitude changes.

The New Libya

This may be the worst article ever. Within the new Libya, someone such as this can have multiple wives and perhaps he'll have the ability to afford it after looting and pillaging his method to Tripoli. And mass rape of African Libyans locked in detention camps hardly counts as sexual liberation.

And in the old Libya, women were the best off in all of North Africa. I only see their status going downhill, just as it did in Iraq and Syria if its secular regime is overthrown by the Saudi-supported Islamists who will also turn that country into a backwards hell fit for plundering by the West.

Misleading Title

Not the best article.

I am sure it will take the Libyans time to readjust back to normal life and their newfound freedome. Just hope the new leadership do a beter job than Egypt.

Just a Pest Control guy. Not got many political views. But this article could have done much better than taking this slant.
