The 7 Fastest-Growing Cities in the World

Hint: They're not where you think they are.

BY KEDAR PAVGI | OCTOBER 26, 2011

7. Lagos, Nigeria

Above, a congested street in Lagos sprawls to the horizon. Lagos may slightly trail Bamako in the rate of its urban population growth, but the Nigerian economic capital dwarfs its West African rival in size and vitality. The city proper had nearly 10 million people in 2010, and is projected to reach 15 million by 2015, with a growth rate of 4.44 percent. Within a couple years, it will eclipse Cairo as the largest city in Africa.

Yes, Chinese, Indian and African cities are among the highly populated areas and will continue to experience probably a high population growth rate. The sight of the congested area in Lagos, Nigeria doesn't look alright, can I just say awful.

City Growth

I think the challenge with many of these fast growing cities i how to support that from an economic growth of the people standpoint. Are the governments going to step up and provide infrastructure necessary to move into the 2nd or 1st 'world' or are we going to have a lot of new slum areas with regionalized trade. Are the black markets just going to pop up where other countries people go to buy an engagement ring and trade diamonds or gold or other stolen or possible illegal artifacts? How do you manage population growth with demand for resources and consumption? I don't have an answer I'm just asking questions I guess.

Probably thought this was an appropriate comment by the author, however totally inaccurate. We have already been defined and when the outsiders look into the US I believe they still see us the way we were. Therefore we just to become what we were and not what China is. To become what China is, is not possible for us.

Population exploding? Definitely. Primarily because of the Muslims. The US and most of Europe population replacement numbers are hovering around 1.8 children per to 2.2 children per. Muslim growth is over 8 children per.

I think it is very good as this contributes to the development of country. Development of cities will make strong nation.

How About Shenzhen

You did not mention one of the most fascinating and fastest growing cities in the world, Shenzhen, China. Thirty years ago it was a few fishing villages with about 30000 people, now in 2011 it has a population of about 14 million people. In 1992 about 2000 cars registered, today close to 2 million. In the past 5 years about 130km of new subway lines built.

Shenzhen was the first "Soecial Economic Zone" where China tried capitalism - it was a huge success. About 100000 factories are located in Shenzhen, Foxconn makes most Apple products and many others in Shenzhen. With Hong Kong right next door, Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta are one of the biggest ocean ports in the world.

Certain Criteria

Yes, I think that Shenzhen should be included in this article, may be certain criteria that make Shenzhen not included. If you are in an air travel, you can see exactly how dense Shenzhen than a few years ago. The rapid developments in Shenzhen has resulted in a shift in the eastern culture, it is very unfortunate.

I see that Dubai is not in

I see that Dubai is not in this list. I think Dubai will never be the greatest city, its a great idea and project, but its execution is far from spectacular, do you know how they treat the workers there ? do you know how many die each day ? those islands they wont last 20 years, nothing can withstand the power of the ocean, I've seen it eat up my home town's coast in less than? 10 year, Dubai is a facade, its pretty when you see it on google earth uk but look behind the curtain and you'll see what it really is...

I think Dubai is fast growing with burgeoning economy as opposed to actual citizen. Ghaziabad

I don't have a big problem with Dubai, as the money comes in and out and they seem to have booms and busts in construction, just at scale. Ghaziabad on the other hand is very interesting to me. I recently taught driving instructor training to a group of Indian nationals who were heading back to their home country to open stores teaching driving in the growing urban centers like Ghaziabad. The challenge in these places is still combatting population growth with economic and job growth, otherwise it's just another huge surge in poverty issues.

Fairbanks is among the fastest growing cities in the country. It has an exceptionally low unemployment rate and large employer base. The city features two U.S. military installations, Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base, as well as the University of Alaska. From 1990 to 2009, the metropolitan area, which now has a 2010 population: of just over 98,000, added 16,000 residents. From 2009 to 2010, home vacancy decreased a tremendous 42 percent.

Yemen growing rapidly - Makes sense when you think about it

Besides the beautiful picture of Sanaa's landscape, it is quite logical that countries with high fertility rates are the most populated ones. Unlike the most modern countries, Yemen doesn't suffer from food stuffed with hormones, and massive Wi-Fi radiation, which cause fertility problems, among other effects to the body.

this is really interesting. I believe that china is going to have big environmental problems, even bigger than today. I still don't agree with the club of rome that say that they want to lower the worlds population by 90 % percent. We have to try to increase the effectiveness of our technology, so that we don't need to decrease the population. But we do need restrictions on environment damage. The rain forest and the animal porn kingdom is under attack. I like people like webster tarpley and alex jones, because they are with the people on this issue. the power elites are too arrogant, and they even want economic genocide, according to tarpley. Obamas science tsar, john p holdren, has written a book called ecoscience where he calls for government sterilisation (forcibly), concentration camps for children and putting sterilants in the drinking water. I think this is to go to far. We need someone more sensible than this. I am not a malthusian, but I still see the problems in the world.
