on March 23 in Havana, Cuba. Fourteen years after Pope John Paul II
visited Cuba, Pope Benedict XVI arrived on the island on March 26. Benedict conducted a Mass in the city of Santiago de Cuba first, followed by one in Havana
before leaving on March 28. In advance of the visit, the government was reported to have rounded up dozens of dissidents, and activists were disappointed that the Pope didn't take a harder line against the regime.
