A Thursday morning suicide attack in Damascus, Syria, killed at least 55 people and wounded more than 370, becoming the most deadly bombing in the 14-month uprising. The blast further undermines the tenuous U.N.-brokered cease-fire currently in place, which had been rapidly losing legitimacy. Victoria Nuland, a U.S. State Department spokeswoman, called for the end of "any and all violence that results in the indiscriminate killing and injury of civilians." As an anonymous Syrian writes in Foreign Policy, "The Syrian government blamed the attacks on 'terrorists,' while the Syrian National Council, an umbrella opposition group, blamed the regime for orchestrating the attacks."
