Life Inside Little America in Afghanistan

Photos from a time when tiki bars and afternoons at the pool dominated the lives of Americans in Afghanistan.

If they didn't want to swim, children could play on the tennis court or frolic in the clubhouse. They often gathered in each other's homes to drink lemonade and listen to Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers on 45 r.p.m. records. But more often than not, they spent their afternoons playing along the banks of the Helmand River.
