It was under Hu Yaobang (right) -- top man in the Party from 1981 until 1987 -- that Chinese leaders first began choosing Western business suits over home-grown Mao suits. One of China's most reformist leaders, Hu's liberalism brought his ouster, but his preference for Western dress stuck.
