The process of modernization continued following the
Japanese annexation of the Korean peninsula in 1910. Seoul underwent dramatic changes during its 35 years under Japanese rule, though it was a period marked by colonial oppression. Alongside the atrocities committed by the Japanese against Koreans, however, Seoul also saw rapid development: Japan installed railroads, telegraph lines, new roads, and schools -- all
of which left their mark even after the Japanese had departed.
