Indian politician Sonia Gandhi talks with her son Rahul Gandhi during a memorial ceremony in New Delhi for her husband and his father, slain former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, on the 21st anniversary of his death on May 21, 2012. Sonia also has a daughter, Priyanka, who was in attendance but who is not pictured.
When Rahul assumed the role of vice president of the All India Congress party this January, his mother "came to my room and cried," Rahul said during an emotional speech after he assumed his new political position. "She understands that power is poison," he said. But she may also have ambitious plans for her son. "Inder Malhotra, a veteran political journalist, says that Sonia intervened to take over the listing Congress ship in 1998 because 'she knew that her dream of passing the baton from her husband to her son would be a pipe dream unless she took over the party,'" James Traub wrote in his recent profile of Rahul for Foreign Policy.
