FOREIGN POLICY Receives Two National Magazine Award Nominations

Magazine Recognized in the General Excellence and Essay Categories

For the third straight year, FOREIGN POLICY has been nominated for the magazine industry’s most coveted prize, the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. The finalists for the awards, presented by the American Society of Magazine Editors, were announced late Wednesday in New York City.

The General Excellence nomination is FOREIGN POLICY’s 4th in the past five years. The magazine took home the “Ellie” for General Excellence in 2003. Since 2005, no other publication in its circulation category has received more General Excellence nominations.

The magazine received a second nomination in the essay category for an article by Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist and bestselling author, Thomas Friedman, titled “The First Law of Petropolitics.” His essay details how rising oil prices empower autocratic regimes around the world.

In reaction to the nominations, FOREIGN POLICY Editor in Chief, Moisés Naím said, “I am thrilled that once again the work of FP’s staff and authors is recognized by the most demanding audience—the editors of the nation’s leading magazines. We take it as further confirmation that our commitment to providing in-depth and unconventional, but accessible analysis of global events is as attractive to our peers in the industry as it has been for our readers.”

On his nomination in the essay category, Thomas Friedman said, “I am excited to be a nominee for my essay because this was truly a FOREIGN POLICY-type article. It came out of a conversation that I had with Moisés Naím about an idea that other publications might have not paid much attention to. But FOREIGN POLICY immediately embraced it. I am honored to count myself among FP’s distinguished roster of authors.”

Jessica T. Mathews, president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, which publishes FOREIGN POLICY, said, “FOREIGN POLICY’s continued recognition is a salute to its ability to provide innovative insights from the world’s leading minds issue after issue. The Carnegie Endowment and its board take enormous pride in the magazine’s accomplishments.”

The 2007 finalists were chosen from 1,773 entries by 334 print and online publications in 25 categories. Winners of the 41st annual awards will be announced at a black-tie gala at New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center on Tuesday, May 1, 2007.
