Eye-opener: They were supposed to usher in a new period of openness and dazzle the world with stunning images of a superpower in the making. China’s full-scale social and economic mobilization has undoubtedly been impressive, but the 2008 Beijing Games have also shown a spotlight on the darker side of the world’s most populous country.
